Alcohol while using clarithromycin+hydroxychloroquine

Post by Martian » Fri 27 Jul 2007 21:00

Does anyone know if it is okay to drink moderate amounts of alcohol (like one bottle of beer each day) while using clarithromycin + hydroxychloroquine?
I have not seen an alcohol contraindication mentioned anywhere.

The only thing I could find was that there is no particular reason to avoid alcohol when use
hydrxychloroquine or that alcohol may be take in moderation.

About clarithromycin I didn't find any interaction between alcohol and clarithromycin.

The only thing was this:

Clarithromycin is converted by the liver to an active metabolite....14-OH clarithromycin, the presence of alcohol interferes with this thus can decrease the effectiveness of the drug. In antibiotics it is CRITICAL that you achieve and maintain a specific blood level of the drug to adequately treat the infection. If you interfere with this you won't get the full benefits of therapy.

Okay, this is useful and interesting info, although a statement from just one person. I will try to find more info on this.
