Lyme borreliosis in England and Wales 2011
NB. These are provisional data subject to revision.
In 2011, 972 cases of Lyme borreliosis were identified in England and Wales residents, an incidence rate of 1.76/100,000 total population. This compares with 905 cases and an incidence rate of 1.64/100,000 in 2010.
In comparison with many other European countries the incidence of Lyme borreliosis is low; for example in Germany in 2002, it was estimated that there were at least 60,000 cases, giving an approximate incidence rate of 75/100,000 2 with other reports of incidence rates up to 111/100,000 in some parts of Germany and over 100,000 cases annually in parts of Slovenia, Austria and some of the Baltic States3 in recent years. Further comparisons of European incidence rates can be found in references 1 and 4.
